Quori – The Dark Dreams of Dal Quor (Part 1)

Sweet Dreams

Deep within the realms of Dream lie many secrets to the cosmos.  The residents of Dal Quor are among those that should have remained distant.  The Quori are a race of beings that interact through the dreams of others, influencing their victims however they can this way.  While the realm of Dal Quor is said to only touch upon the series of Crystal Sphere dubbed “Eberron”, some fear that the Quori’s influence stretched far into the multiverse.  Some theorize that they have an intricate network traveling through the distant eldritch plane known only as “The Far Realm.”  No matter the truth, none of our dreams are safe from these malicious foes.

To many, they are a race of boogeymen.  They manifest in horrific forms; your worst fears, deformed and mutilated killers, sometimes even their natural forms as well!  No matter the shape they take, they stalk victims in their sleep, waiting to either bring them to ruin or control them… with or without them fully aware.  Rumors have begun to persist that they can warp reality around the victim as they sleep.  One witness saw a sleeping child pulled into their mattress, only for a geyser of blood to shoot from the newly formed hole in the mattress.  If this account and many others are true, the Quori are as terrifying within the dream realm as they are outside of it.

Author’s Note:  There are many reasons for me to tackle this awesome set of literal nightmares.  Part of it is the strange sense of Lovecraftian horror these creatures give off.  Another part of it is to honor the dream-filled horrors of the sadly late Wes Craven.  Enjoy.

Challenge 9 (5,000 XP)

Improved Dream Invasion. While residing on Dal Quar, the Plane of Dreams, the Quori may attempt to leap into the mind of a dreaming subject. This ability functions as per the Dream spell, cast as a 5th Level spell. The Quori cannot use this ability again until after a long rest period has finished. The DC is 16. In addition, victims who fail this save take 1 level of exhaustion for every time this Quori invades their dreams.

Empathic Feedback. As a reaction, the Quori can attempt to inflict pain back to those who harm it. When using Empathic Feedback, the target must succeed a DC 16 Intelligence saving throw or deal with one of the following:

  • 3d8 psychic damage if the Quori was damaged
  • The same mind-affecting ability/spell if the attack was a mind-affecting ability/spell that does no

Changing Face. A creature capable of sight within 60 feet of this Quori must make a Wisdom saving throw or they see this Quori as someone that they know and care strongly about. The form depends on the target’s’ memory. This form will act in a non-threatening way or fight in a manner that resembles the familiar form. As long as the viewer is within 60 feet of this effect, it remains active. Succeeding against the save results in the target being immune to this effect for 24 hours.

In addition, this Quori may take the form of an indistinct pale humanoid wearing a dark robe. This otherwise functions like Disguise Self. Either way, the DC is 16.

Omnipresent. While in the plane of Dal Quar, the Quori may teleport anywhere within 120 ft. of them as their movement and can be used at-will.

Brain Lock. Targets hit with Idyllic Touch are thrown into a state of utter blankness. These targets must succeed a Wisdom saving throw or become incapacitated. This lasts until the target succeeds saving throw or after 1 minute. The target may save again at the end of their turn. The DC is 16.

Willing Possession. The Quori may indefinitely take over a willing host’s mind.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The Quori can make up to 2 attacks with Pincers and Stinger

Idyllic Touch. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage. This attack counts as magical. Target is subject to Brain Lock if hit.

Mental Thrust. Ranged Magic Attack: +9 to hit, range 60 ft./120 ft. Hit: 14 (3d6+4) psychic damage.

These keepers of eldritch lore function as archivists and researchers for the Quori, finding worthy targets of possession as well as studying new ways of obtaining targets. They typically disguise themselves as robed humanoids as a means of remaining inconspicuous.

More Quori are on the way!
